Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP) is Uganda’s largest and oldest national park, renowned for its dramatic waterfalls, diverse wildlife, and rich history.

📍 Location & Size

Situated in northwestern Uganda, MFNP spans approximately 3,893 square kilometers across the districts of Buliisa, Nwoya, Kiryandongo, and Masindi . The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, which flows through the park from east to west, culminating in the spectacular Murchison Falls, where the river plunges through a narrow gorge.

🌊 Murchison Falls

The park's namesake, Murchison Falls, is a breathtaking natural wonder where the Nile River forces its way through a 7-meter-wide gorge before plunging 43 meters into the "Devil's Cauldron," creating a thunderous roar and a stunning display of mist and rainbows.

🛶 Activities

Visitors to MFNP can engage in a variety of activities:

  • Game Drives: Explore the park's savannahs to spot the "Big Five" and other wildlife.

  • Boat Safaris: Cruise along the Nile to the base of Murchison Falls or to the Nile Delta, observing hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species .

  • Nature Walks: Guided walks offer an intimate experience with the park's flora and fauna.

  • Sport Fishing: The Nile's waters are home to Nile perch and other fish species, providing exciting fishing opportunities.

🏛️ History & Conservation

MFNP was established in 1952, making it Uganda's oldest national park . The area was initially gazetted as a game reserve in 1926 to protect its abundant wildlife .
