Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Rwenzori Mountains National Park, often referred to as the "Mountains of the Moon," is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in western Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Established in 1991 and covering approximately 996 square kilometers, the park is renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and challenging trekking routes. ​

🏔️ Geography & Peaks

The Rwenzori Mountains are Africa's third-highest mountain range, featuring six distinct peaks: Stanley, Speke, Baker, Emin, Gessi, and Savioa. Mount Stanley's Margherita Peak stands at 5,109 meters, making it the third-highest point in Africa. The park's diverse landscapes include glaciers, waterfalls, and alpine meadows. ​

🌿 Biodiversity

Rwenzori Mountains National Park boasts a rich array of flora and fauna:​

  • Mammals: Over 70 species, including forest elephants, chimpanzees, and the Rwenzori otter.

  • Birds: More than 217 species, with 19 endemic to the Albertine Rift, such as the Rwenzori turaco and scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird.

  • Vegetation Zones: The park encompasses various ecological zones, from montane forests to alpine meadows, each supporting unique plant communities.

  • Trekking: Challenging hikes to peaks like Margherita Peak, with recent safety enhancements including new bridges and climbing ropes.
